When in July 1977 EMMA published the first of many articles on (as it was then called) female circumcision – “Klitorisbeschneidung” –, little did I know that 41 years later I would remain committed to ending this grievous abuse of children’s rights.
My talk will trace the history of failure and (some little) progress of international and local opposition to ritual ablations of girl’s genitalia with special focus on the in novative approach, endorsed by Ban Ki-Moon, of the Guardian Global Media Campaign against FGM, funded first by the paper itself before becoming an independent charity launched in 2017.
